February is a month for all the feels, usually accompanied by cards, sweets, and romantic gestures. But a month dedicated to love shouldn’t be about just one type of love, but all love. So let’s take a moment to celebrate all the ways love fills our lives.
When we think of love, the image that comes to mind will be different for each of us. Some will immediately envision the love of a parent for their children, or the love between life partners, best friends, siblings, family members. Many of us will see the love connection between humans and animals and even between strangers. Every one of these visions and experiences of love, and the many more not mentioned, are valid, beautiful, and worthy of celebration. They each make the world a better place!
Wherever you live in the world, February is a perfect month for love because, whether it’s winter or summer, our hearts and bodies are ready to shake off one season of the year and jump into the next. The new leaves, green or gold, real or symbolic, engage our senses and make us fall in love with this world all over again.
This month is a gentle reminder to fall in love with our lives each and every day. With our interests, the places we love visiting, and all the reasons we get up each day. These reasons certainly include the people and animals in our lives, but they will also include other things: the smell of coffee or tea in the morning, the feel of a good sweater, the taste of an incredible meal, a visit to a special destination. They should also include the beautiful face that looks back at you in the mirror every morning. Love for ourselves is one of the most important types of love there is.
We might think as we look around the world today, with social and political division and suffering and sickness, that the world needs love more than ever. We might be right. But every generation will tell you that their generation needed love just as much. Because love is the timeless tonic for all ages, for all problems. It is the ultimate gift, the ultimate act. And its importance, power, and diversity should be embraced and celebrated.
