International summer escapes for Americans

Photo by: Claudia in Mexico City

As someone who travels often, these days I find myself daydreaming about where I might go and wondering how soon I can get there. Are you the same? If you’re also a U.S. citizen like me, we’ve had to accept the hard truth that right now we can’t just travel anywhere we want. While we are fortunate to live in such a vast, varied country, with so much to do and see, there’s something about international travel that feeds the soul in a different way. It gets you out of your comfort zone, introduces you to new people and cultures, and inspires personal growth and unexpected friendships.

So, if you’ve been wondering, like me, where in the world you can go abroad this summer, that’s what we’re going to find out! (At least, as it stands today.) We’ll need to keep an open mind. It may be that our dream destinations and original vacation spots aren’t open to us. That’s okay. This is an opportunity. To explore roads and places we might not have considered otherwise this summer. After all, this year has been one of new territory, metaphorically speaking, so it’s only fitting that our physical travels should take us to literal new places, as well!

Wherever you choose to go, know that our local photographers are open for business, able to do contactless photoshoots, and ready to capture your momentous summer escape!

Before we dive in...

The destinations listed below are currently welcoming Americans, some without any restrictions, others asking for documentation of a recent negative COVID-19 test result and perhaps 24 hours of quarantine. However, because rules and requirements are changing so quickly, rather than us detailing entry requirements that may change tomorrow, we want to  empower you to go to the source and check when and if you’re ready to travel. As the Department of State advises: “check the websites of the relevant U.S. embassies or consulates for information on restrictions, foreign quarantine policies, and urgent health information provided by relevant authorities.” And do it often!

We also want to acknowledge that the State Department’s March health advisory to U.S. citizens still stands, and that is to avoid non-essential international travel. This does not mean that we can’t travel, but that we should give careful thought before doing so, and understand the potential risks.

Finally, remember that when returning home, some states may require a 14-day quarantine. See if that applies to you and if so, plan on a relaxing staycation when you return from vacation!

So, where can we go?

As we mentioned in our recent post for our European travelers, Turkey and Croatia are open to U.S. travelers with none to minimal requirements. But they’re not the only ones! Here are eleven more tantalizing options.

Aruba

This friendly, sunny island just 20 miles off the coast of Venezuela (and out of the hurricane path!) is a perfect Caribbean escape. Sink your toes in white sandy beaches, indulge in local products and cuisine and savor the cooling trade winds. Roam the island, swim in turquoise waters, and explore Arikok National Park.

Barbados

The most easterly island of the Caribbean, Barbados offers soft sands, leaning palm trees and colonial architecture. There are endless gorgeous beaches, interior gardens with views, and epic surfing on the East Coast. Definitely make time for rum tasting, but also get your British fix with an afternoon tea while you catch a game of cricket!

Belize

On the eastern coast of Central America with a view of the Caribbean Sea, this country offers dense jungles, Mayan ruins, beaches, and a port city. Its many low-lying islands, or cayes, are a refuge of nature and wildlife. Snorkel the beautiful Belize Barrier Reef, dive the Blue Hole, hike to waterfalls, and kayak or rent a private catamaran.

Dominican Republic

Located on the Eastern half of the island of Hispaniola, this destination has all the nature and adventure you could hope for this summer. Beaches, rainforests, and the tallest mountain in the Caribbean, Pico Duarte, greet visitors, along with fresh seafood, friendly locals, various rums, and beautiful sunsets.

Dubai

If you love summer heat and over-the-top luxury, Dubai is the escape for you this season. Immerse yourself in the glittering skyline of the city, relax on the beaches along the coast of the Persian Gulf, explore the flavors and scents of the old neighborhood of Al Fahidi, and make a point to get out into the stunning desert which surrounds the city.

Egypt

From Alexandria to Aswan, this country will take your breath away, and not just the ancient temples and pyramids. The modern cities, the Sahara, and the seaside will dazzle. Try delicious fruits, visit markets, ride camels, and drink Arabic tea. Sail up the legendary Nile River in a traditional felucca, climb Mount Sinai, or dive amongst coral reefs in the Red Sea.

Jamaica

Make reggae music the soundtrack of your summer. This popular Caribbean island is always a good idea, with its fantastic beaches, stunning terrain, friendly people, and overall good vibe. Journey into the Blue Mountains, sip local coffee, hike to unforgettable waterfalls and let the island spirit wash away your cares.

Maldives

In the Arabian Sea, south of India and Sri Lanka, you’ll find a paradise made up of 1,200 islands, each offering stunning turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and tranquility. Take a seaplane or boat to hop between islands, snorkeling, diving and surfing. Or just relax under a palm leaf umbrella on the beach and gaze out at the horizon.

Mexico

Just south of our border, Mexico is perhaps the easiest escape available this summer, some of us able to get there by car. A large country, our neighbor is full of natural wonders, archaeological sites, and a cosmopolitan capital. The food, music and beaches are world renowned and there’s something for every type of traveler.

Serbia

Located in Eastern Europe, this small country is one of the Balkan jewels. With its colorful, historical cities, and five national parks stretching from mountains to the banks of the Danube River, there’s so many pleasures to soak up. Marvel at fields of sunflowers, enjoy wine-tasting, or even go on a motorcycle ride through the countryside.

Tanzania

An eclectic and favorite African destination, this country has it all. From the plains of the Serengeti, teaming with elephants, lions, leopards and rhinos, all of which can all be seen on safari, to the peak of Kilimanjaro National Park. Offshore, the islands of Zanzibar provide a tropical experience that includes mangrove forests, stunning beaches and water sports.

Another option

As we also mentioned to our European travelers, if you have a good chunk of time available for your vacation or are already working remotely, consider visiting a country that is welcoming U.S. travelers but requiring a 14-day quarantine. Options include England, Ireland, and Ecuador. The trick, of course, is finding the right property to quarantine at, but research is half the fun of travel. While enjoying your retreat, perhaps in the countryside, with a book and your favorite person, book one of local, professional photographers for a celebratory photoshoot when you’re out of quarantine and can explore your vacation spot at length.

A parting thought before you depart!

Right now, as Americans, we have an extra responsibility to put our best foot forward when traveling. Those countries who are welcoming us have faced their own challenges during this pandemic, and even as they open up to the world, including us, their citizens may feel nervous and uncertain. Of all people, we should understand! And we must take that understanding and compassion with us.
If we seek out international travel for the way it enriches our lives, lets us enrich the lives of those people we encounter on our travels in return, bringing respect, kindness and compassion. Follow the local rules and guidelines and see the city or country you're visiting as more than a destination. See it filled with neighbors within our global community who have welcomed us into their home.
