Behind the lens with photographer Alex in Tokyo
Love can make you do all sorts of things. It can spark a passion that leads to an eternal pursuit of capturing beautifully genuine moments through a lens. It can make you travel far and wide, from lush green pastures dripping into the sea, and straight through, to experience other continents, lifestyles, and languages. Love is an excellent reason to move forward and away from all that is known. It lends a hand and leads the way. Because when you lead with love, you won’t be led astray.
Originally from a sleepy coastal town in eastern Australia, Alex made his way to Canada, where he followed in the footsteps of his favorite pastime and began officially studying Photography in University.
Today, our lens is focusing on Alex,
part of the Shoot My Travel team based in Tokyo.
The start of something new…
Having lived in Japan for over a year and a half, Alex has found a home within the culture and language from which his wife was brought up in. But his worldly adventures didn't start there. Travel and photography have been his life for as long as he can remember and it has taken his heart and head all over the world.
Moving from a laid back beach town to the beautiful, bustling city of Tokyo has been quite the eye-opener for him. He’s shared with us that “Tokyo is the most surprising place I have ever been to, one second you can be surrounded by millions of people in the bustling city of neon lights then 30 minutes later you can be surrounded by trees in the countryside. You never know what will happen.”
So it’s no surprise to hear that “Japan is best explored by foot”. Apparently, regardless of how accessible and easy the trains may be to ride, one will miss so many inspiring and exciting places when you speed by them on a Shinkansen (Japan’s high-speed bullet trains).
Alex lives to capture honest moments. There’s a reason why people tend to hire photographers for special occasions! It’s the exciting, emotional journey that when captured, creates beautiful memories that can be looked back at and enjoyed for a lifetime. It’s his goal to inspire the viewer with aesthetically appealing images, and it takes years of practice to develop the technique to get the right shot the moment it counts the most.
For any looking to pursue the alluring art of photography, Alex advises to “Just keep shooting!!! The more you shoot, the better you can get. After a while, you will discover what works and what doesn't work. This is how you develop your own style.”
Photography style is unique to each individual. But what doesn't change is a great place for a photo shoot.
Despite loving to shoot all around Tokyo, his top 3 favorite spots are the following…
1. Shinjuku: (Which basically looks like the Times Square of Tokyo) Because it has amazing lights at night.
2. Yokohama: Because it has a really cool street scene. (you’ll know what he means when you’re there 😉)
3. Tokyo Bay: (Where you can see the whole city behind you) because it’s gorgeous at night time.
We are so lucky to have incredible artists and world wanderers like Alex on our international family of travel photographers.
